Dr. Anne-Marie Scott, one of the coolest professors in one of the coolest depts on campus (Nutrition), is embarking on a project that is, quite frankly, uber-cool.
She is going to spend a year helping a family with school-aged children to convert from a fast-food lifestyle to living as locavores. Anne-Marie isn't into typical diets to lower calorie or fat intake, but she enjoys using local whole foods and is a fan of the Slow Food Movement.
She plans to document the process in her blog and will ask the family members to do the same. This is one of her personal projects. It isn't being funded by the university.
I'm not sure how the family should expect their food bill to change (local foods can be more expensive than others, but cooking from scratch is often cheaper than buying fast food). There will be a moderate time commitment. I'm wishing that my fam fitted the demographic that Anne-Marie is seeking :)
If you're interested in participating in her "Locavore Makeover" or just in reading more, check out Anne-Marie's blog. There was also a recent post on this project in the Greensboro News & Record.
One final encomium - check out this article from the Summer 2009 UNCG Alumni Magazine for a spotlight of anthropology professor Dr. Susan Andreatta and Anne-Marie.
